Teej

Teej is the fasting festival of women in Nepal. It falls in the month of August or early September. Married women observe Teej fast to honor Lord Shiva and for long and healthy life of their husband. Unmarried girls also observe fast on this day for a good husband. Teej celebrations lasts for three pious days. Traditional dances and songs form an important feature of Teej celebrations. Red color is considered auspicious for women observing Teej fast and so most of them dress up in red or bridal clothes.

Teej is an annual festival of Nepali women. The festival is celebrated with utmost dedication and love by the women in Nepal. Preparations for the festival begin well in advance. Fabric stores, sarees and suit outlets are stocked with the bridal red color fabric. Women spend most of the time shopping when Teej is near.

Teej festival celebrations are carried further with sumptuous feasts and traditional performances. On this day, women dress up beautifully. They clad themselves in red colored apparels, wear glass bangles, heavy ornaments and apply henna. Teej gives women an opportunity to dress like the newly wed. They worship the epitome of divine marriage - Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, for longevity and prosperity for their husband and family.

Three Days of Teej

Teej is a three-day-long festival in Nepal and each day has its own significance.
1) First day is called 'Dar Khane Din', the day to make merry.
2) Second day is a 'fasting day'.
3) The third day is called 'Rishi Panchami' in Nepal which is a day to perform Teej Puja.
Dar Khane Din
The first day of Teej in Nepal is called the 'Dar Khane Din'. On this day, the womenfolk dressed in the finest clothed gather at one place and perform traditional dance and sing devotional songs. A special food called 'dar' is eaten. Celebrations continue till midnight after which the 24-hour-long fast begins.
Fasting Day
The second or the fasting day of the Teej festival is dedicated to pujas and prayers. The holy Pashupatinath temple is thronged by women in red sarees to offer prayers to Lord Shiva. Women gather in the temple and circumambulate the Lingam (phallic symbol of the Lord) adorned with flowers, sweets and coins. The beautifully decorated idols of Shiva and Parvati are offered fruits and flowers to seek blessings of the divine spirits. Lighting of an oil lamp is very important part of the puja ceremony. It is said that the oil lamp should be kept lit all night to avoid bad omen.
Rishi Panchami
The third day of the Teej Festival is called Rishi Panchami. On this day, the seven sages of the Hindu pantheon are worshiped by women in a belief that it will cleanse all sins of the previous year. Womenfolk take a holy bath with red mud found on the roots of the sacred Datiwan bush, along with its leaves. After three hours of rigorous cleansing, they come out purified and absolved from all sins. After this they sit in a semicircle while a priest sitting in the middle chants devotional prayers

Janai Purnima

Janai Purnima

As is well known, Nepal has an abundance of colourful festivals. It may also be clear by now that all such festivals revolve around the different phases of the moon. Which is natural, considering that the Bikram Sambat calendar used in Nepal is also a lunar calendar. In this vein, the full moon day of 10th August 2014 this year (and the same, or a day, near to it every year) is an important day of the calendar, having as it does, a couple of important events.
The most important is called Janai Purnima. Brahmins change their janai (sacred thread) once a year on this day while other Hindus have a sacred thread tied around their wrists. For the Brahmins, it’s an affirmation of their status, while in the case of the latter, the thread around their wrist is supposed to offer them protection against all ills. Most people keep the thread on for at least three months,  until Laxmi Puja, when it is taken off to be tied around a cow’s tail, a deed that assures a smooth journey to heaven since, after you die, you’ll be able to hang on to it as the cow pulls you across the Baitarni River on the way. Well, the tales are as tall as the mountains, you’ll be saying, but hold on, there’s more to come. The story behind Janai Purnima is taller still!
It goes like this: a demon called Bali—having won Lord Indra’s blessings—became so powerful that it scared the gods to death, who then begged Lord Vishnu to set things right. Now, wise Vishnu, what he does, is this: he goes to Bali in the form of a dwarf and begs for some land to call his own. Bali cannot refuse; he is oath-bound to give charity, but he does want to know about the dwarf’s expectations, and asks, “How much?” The reply is succinct: “As much as I can cover in three strides.” Naturally, Bali is pleased because the dwarf has pretty short legs. “Okay then, sure,” he says. However, to his amazement, the dwarf now begins to grow really big, so much so, that his one stride covers the earth, and the other, heaven. Too late, Bali realizes he has been tricked by Vishnu who now asks him about where next to put his third step. In frustration, Bali cries, “On my head, Lord!”

"Okay, sure,” says Vishnu and promptly fulfills his wish. In this way, Bali is pushed deep into hell. During all this, Bali has also been bound with a sacred thread, which explains the priests’ mantra while tying the scared thread around your wrist during Janai Purnima, “Thus I tie the Raksha round your wrist, the same which bound the arm of the mighty Bali, King of the Danavas. May its protection be eternal.’ While the festival is celebrated all over, Gosaikunda Lake (4,315 m) in Rasuwa District, is the most happening place at this time, where hundreds of pilgrims and shamans congregate to take ritual dips in the icy waters. Water from this lake is believed to flow some 60 km southwest to the Kumbheshwar Temple tank in Patan, thereby making this also a lively venue for the occasion.
This day is also when Raksha Bandhan is celebrated (particularly in the Terai) during which girls tie a thread bracelet around their brothers’ wrists, reminding them of their protective duties. Meanwhile, in the Muktinath Temple premises in Mustang, Gurungs and Thakalis observe the Yatung Mela on this day. Drinking and feasting is as much a part of the occasion as is chasing one another on mountain ponies. As for Kathmandu’s Newars, they have a festival called Gunhu Punhi during which a lot of kwati (a soup of nine different beans) is consumed. Frogs in nearby fields are, in the meantime, offered food by women in a ritual called Byanchaa Nakegu (‘feeding the frogs’). All in all, an important day, don’t you think?

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan

The festival, which expresses love, care and duty among brother and sister also with joy and happiness, is called “Raksha Bandhan”. The meaning of Raksha Bandhan is “the tie or knot of protection” where Raksha means protection and Bandhan means knot. So, when sister tie a knot on her brother’s wrist, brother gives her promises in return that he will take care of her throughout her life in all circumstances. This holy festival falls on the day of full moon in the month of Shravan maas; so, also known as “shravni purnima”.

Basically, the festival is for Hindu religion but now all communities celebrate this festival in different customs so it is also known as secular and multicultural festival. In India, different states celebrate this sacred festival with different rituals. In Uttarakhand kumaon religion people change their janaue on that day and called it as Janopunyu and in Maharashtra the festival is celebrated as Narali Purnima or Shravani Purnima where Narali means coconut. In different parts of Maharashtra especially fishermen community offer Nariyal into sea to please God Varun (God of sea) and also they believe that new season of fishing starts on this day.

Raksha Bandhan is the favorite festival of siblings or cousin brother sister. To celebrate this auspicious day, ladies starts preparation many days before such as they buy rakhi made up of colorful threads and stones from the market. Mehandi is also the part of this festival as girls apply mehandi on their hand for this occasion. On this special day, sisters prepare Pooja thali with kumkum, rice, diya, sweet and Rakhi. Sister ties Rakhi on her brother’s wrist and apply roli chawal on his forehead as tilak and in
return brother takes pledge to keep her protected from any difficulty all over the life.

In India, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated as secular festival which involves all communities in bond of brother sister love and affection whether it is Muslims or Christians. The festival is not only for biologically related brother and sister, it is also for those people who are biologically unrelated, they also shows their feelings of love and care towards each other by celebrating this festival. This tradition is also celebrated among political leaders where women and girls tie rakhi to Prime minister, politicians, social leaders and also soldiers’s hands assuming them brother.

Gai Jatra

Gai Jatra

Gaijatra is the festival of cows.Gai is known as cow and jatra is known as festival in Nepal. This festival is basically celebrated in Kathmandu valley by the Newar community. According to ancient age since time by memory, every family who had last one relative during the past year must take participate in a procession through the streets of Kathmandu leading a cow. If a cow is not available a young boy dressed as a cow is considered as a fair substitute. In Hinduism, a cow is regarded as a most respect among all the domestic animals. It is believe that the cow, revered as a holy animal in Hindu will help the deceased relative's journey to heaven. According to Malla period King Pratap malla lost his son, his wife, The Queen remained quite disturb. The King was very sad to see this condition of his adorable Queen. The King in spite of several efforts couldn't lessen the grief of his wife. By all means he wanted to see a little smile on the lips of his sweetheart. He announced that everyone made the Queen laugh would be rewarded
During this festival Gaijatra, the cow procession was brought before the grief stricken Queen. Then the participants began ridiculing and befooling the essential people of the society. At last, when the social injustice and other evils were highlight and attacked mercilessly, the Queen couldn't stop smiling. The Queen laughed and King Pratap Malla instituted a tradition of including jokes, satire, mockery, and lampoon in Gaijatra day's .After the occasion is filled with songs and jokes, mockery and humor of every kind became the order of the day until late evening. This festival is good festival which enables the people to accept the reality of death one to prepare themselves for the life after death. By Hinduism" Whatever a man does as good as bad in his lifetime is a preparation to lead a good life, after death, so that whatever men in a lifetime do only the good thing happening in a lifetime. It is celebrated on 11th of bhadra.

DashainAs it is well-known fact we Nepalese have more gods and goddesses than human beings and more festival than those actually fits in a yearly calendar of 365 days but what makes the festive month of Dashain and Tihar quiet special and is regarded as the greatest festival of a hindu culture is once in every year  we all Nepalese from different caste and creed free ourself from our day-to-day routine and all the tensions that comes along with it and set ourself to a month of full enjoyment with our precious family members and the ones that really makes our lives precious and makes ourself feel important in this world.

The festival itself lasts for about 15 days starting from the first day of dashain with ghatasthapana following with nawaratri including fulpathi , mahaasthamimahanawami and concluding with 10th day of mahadashami which is also known as the day of tika, where elders and youngsters shares blessings with each other and wish for the prosperity and well being.it’s specially fun for the kids as i remember when i was one getting all those money from the elders as dakshina  and the sharing of blessings as tika lasts for 4 more days so that people from far away places can come and make a visit even though only once in a year it makes those visits special and as a lovely remembrance. In all these 15 days people makes sure they won’t miss out any fun part of two weeks of festive eve. From meeting old friends and playing cards to drinking and all.  And after a quick week break there comes tihar which is a part of dashain more like a second half of it. It is more popularly seen as the festive week of bright and sparkling nights with worshipping of goddess laxmi  and concluding with bhai tika which is the resemblance of love between brothers and sisters. Here the more fun part is playing deusi and bhailo and burning firecrackers and wherever you go you find one’s home bright in lights in their own way.

Happy dashain 2011
Happy Vijaya Dashami

What makes this festive month special and different is that we can see that undoubtly happy reaction and smiles on the face of the people when the month is approaching and it helps us all free ourself from the hassle of life and take a break from whatever it is that we’re upto and indulge ourself into  a month of enjoyious pleasure and happy times and look forward to the next one.
At last i wish all my viewers and subscribers along with my well wishers and all my friends and family a very happy dashain and tihar and hope you all will enjoy at it’s best avoiding all the negative sides. Thank you

KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI

Janmashtami, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Krishna. He is considered as an avatar of the god Vishnu. Lord Krishna was born in Mathura. Gokul and Vrindavan  was his play ground.
Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana in the Hindu calendar in 2011 on 22 August in North India.
Rasa leela  रासलीला , are a special feature in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan, and regions following Vaishnavism in Manipur.  Rasa lila is a stage program  of Krishna's youthful days. To reach a high-hanging pot of butter and break it is a tradition. It is a major event in Tamil Nadu on Gokulashtami.
Janmaashtami, popularly known in Mumbai and Pune as Dahi Handi. It is celebrated with enormous zeal and enthusiasm. Handis are set up around the city, and groups of youngsters, called Govinda Pathaks, travel around in trucks trying to break as many handis as possible during the day.  In Gujarat where the city Dwarka has Dwarkadhish temple celebrates it with pomp and joy.
In the eastern state of Orissa, around Puri and West Bengal in Nabadwip, people celebrate it with fasting and doing puja at midnight. Purana Pravachana from Bhagavata Purana are done from the 10th Skandha which deals with pastimes of Lord Krishna. The next day is called Nanda Utsav or the joyous celebration of Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda Maharaani. On that day people break their fast and offer various cooked sweets during the early hour.
Krishnashtami brings much joy and feeling of unity. It considered to be a  worship of Lord  Krishna.  Sri Krishna laid down advices and sermons in Gita. Every word uttered in this book always gave inspiration to fight  against the injustice. So we should pray to our god with our deep heart.

Every day he takes out little time for me in the night to acknowledge my day to day activities & problems if any. He is my best friend. I can discuss everything with him without any hesitation. Things that I fail to reveal out to my close friends, I can easily discuss them with my Dad.
Whenever I need his help, he is always available for me. He is like a hero to me. He is a funny, cool, adventurous and smart human being. He loves to travel and that is why we both always go to long distant places (sometimes abroad) on vacations. I love to travel too & that is why vacations are always awaited as far as its Dad’s company. Apart from domestic cities till date we have travelled to San Francisco, Beijing, Toronto, New York & Sydney.
Dad says that he started visiting the globe when he was a college student. According to him his experience has helped him to broaden his horizons. This is the reason he started me quite early. He wants me to experience the world because he believes that traveling is an education in itself. When I was at the age of 10 I took my first flight to Sydney. I have learn a lot of things under my Dad’s guidance which education fails to teach. The most important lesson that Dad has taught me is to be discipline & hard working in life. These 2 things are the key ingredients to achieve success in life.
Today I am just 14 years old & at this tender age Dad has taught me a lot of things that people at the age of 20 fails to understand. He has taught me what life is all about. He has showed me the way to achieve success. He has showed me the opportunities that exist in front of me. But at the same time he has left the decision up to me in terms of which path to choose. He is very confident that his efforts to make me a good human being will never go in vein. Seeing his confidence in me some day I want to make him proud. I thank God everyday for giving me such a loving and caring father. I also wish to see him in good health for the rest of my life.
